Returning the Gaze

3D scanning and modelling for bronze casting, 2024

In 2024, for its bicentenary, the Museo Egizio in Turin invited Ali Cherri for a residency. The artist conceived Returning the Gaze, a project supported by PAC2024 and installed in the grand vestibule, in front of the Gallery of the Kings: seven artefacts from the collection, sarcophagi and statues, partly or wholly deprived of their gaze, whose missing elements were restored in polished bronze with the De Carli foundry in Volvera.

Socle modelled the missing elements in 3D, reshaped to the artist's vision from 3D scans of the artefacts, ahead of their casting in bronze. The pieces were then shown in Paris, in the display cases of the Bourse de Commerce passage, as part of the exhibition Twenty-Four Ghosts per Second (Vingt-quatre fantômes par seconde), within "Corps et âmes", until 25 August 2025.
